All of the products that Aquatic Systems carries for weed & algae control are EPA registered and registered by stores for sale and use. It is very important that only products that are registered for use in ponds & lakes be used for weed and algae control. Products that are not registered can cause fish kill, disrupt the ecological balance of the pond, kill trees on the shoreline and may even have harmful effects on humans. For a product to be EPA registered means that the product has gone through rigorous testing to determine it's toxicity levels to humans, fish and other wildlife and to the environment. On a federal level the restrictions for use of the product is right on the label, whether it has restrictions for swimming, fishing, irrigation or other use of the water, on a state level the restrictions vary and it is wise to check with your states conservation department to see if chemical treatment requires a permit.
When treating for weeds or algae, oxygen depletion must kept in mind, killing to much vegetation can result in a fish kill from lack of oxygen. Before treatment read the product label to check for any waiting periods for swimming, fishing, fish consumption, irrigation, animal watering or human consumption of the water. It also is a good idea to follow proper safety procedures when applying chemicals, protective clothing like gloves, goggles and possibly a respirator may be necessary. Just because the chemical is safe once it is in the water does not necessarily mean that it is safe to handle, breath or ingest in it's concentrated form. When doing the application it is also not a good idea to be eating, drinking or smoking.
