One of the many joys of owning a pond or lake is the wildlife that they attract, however some of the wildlife can represent major problems for the property owner. The two types of wildlife that most commonly create problems are Geese and Muskrats.
Geese
Geese have gotten to be a major problem for pond and lake owners, their droppings can litter beach areas and back yards to the point where it becomes very unsightly and in some cases even a health hazard. There have been many techniques tried to rid pond and lake property owners of an over abundance of geese, most of which show very little results. The use of plastic swans & alligators, noise makers and real swans have shown to be very ineffective.
The two solutions that we recommend are Goose Grid and a product called TurfSheild.
TurfSheild
TurfSheild is a bird repellant, that is very effective on any type of bird that eats or pecks at grass, sand or gravel, although TurfSheild is not selective to the type of bird it will repel, the product was designed with Geese as it's primary target.
TurfSheilds active ingredient is the artificial flavoring that is used in grape Kool Aide, grape bubble gum and grape popsicles. This product will not harm the geese, however geese and other birds are repulsed by the taste of this product.
Geese are very territorial, many people are not aware that the geese that visit them every year, are the same geese and their off spring that was there the year before. Since the same geese come back every year, they can be trained to stay out of specific areas, such as beaches, picnic areas and back yards. Once the geese have tasted the grass, sand or gravel, in the areas where you have used this product, they will stay out of these areas.Click here for TurfSheild product information.
For our customers that have used Rejexit AG-36 from us in the past we are replacing Rejexit with the TurfSheild product. TurfSheild has the same active ingredient, however it has twice the amount of active indredient that Rejexit has. TurfSheild also has a much improved sticking agent.
Goose Grid
Goose Grid is a fine black plastic line that is placed around the perimeter of the pond and is checker boarded across the surface of the pond. The geese from the air can see the pattern of this and mistake it for some type of trap and do not land.
Since Goose Grid is placed above the water, it is used primarily in ponds that are not used for fishing or boating. Goose Grid can also be used as a temporary installation during the winter or any other time of the year where the pond is not used for either fishing or boating.
Muskrats
This small critter can do much to destroy your shoreline, in ponds and lakes that are dammed or diked, it is not uncommon for them to create serious leakage problems. The holes along the shore line can represent serious erosion problems and even a health problem if you step in one of them and twist your ankle. One of the most common methods of controlling Muskrats is to shoot them, this however is very difficult if you live in an urban area and may even be illegal depending upon your municipality or states laws. Also trying to shoot Muskrats is not very effective since they are very shy and stay well hidden. Another method that has been tried with mixed results is to trap them and then transport them to another area.
What we normally recommend is either to rip rap the edges of the pond with at least a 2 inch stone or larger, or the use of chicken wire. The use of a small mesh chicken wire is relatively inexpensive and will do much to deter the Muskrats from destroying your shoreline. Rip rapping the entire shore line is more expensive, but will also stop any erosion problems that you may be having.
