Aquatic Systems handles a number of products for algae control, in this section we will cover Cutrine-Plus liquid, granular, and captain liquid algaecides. Copper Sulfate & Ponds Dyes will be covered in their own sections.

Cutrine-Plus & captain are chelated copper compound, what this means is that the product will not react to the water hardness, so if you treat in the morning you will have 8 - 10 hours of contact time. Due to the long contact time, extremely low rates of copper can be used, making these products safe for the aquatic life in the body of water when used per label directions..

Pond & lake use restrictions: None

Application Rates:

Since filamentous algae grows down to around 6 feet, we are treating for approximately an average of 3 feet of water depth, looking at the label the application rate comes out to just under two gallons per surface acre, so our normal recommendations for Cutrine-Plus or captain is 2 gallons to the surface acre. Planktonic algae grows in the upper 2 - 3 feet of water so the normal recommendation is also 2 gallons per surface acre. Chara & Nitella are more resistant so they require a higher application rate, in using either of the liquids we recommend the use of 4 gallon per surface acre for Chara & Nitella control.

Cutrine Plus & captain are diluted before applying, the main reason for this is so that you can cover the surface area that you are treating, we have found also that diluting the product with different dilution rates for the three types of algae can increase the success rate of your application. Our recommendations on dilution are as follows.

Filamentous Algae - 10 to 1 with water
Planktonic Algae - 30 to 1 with water
Chara & Nitella - 5 to 1 with water

In smaller bodies of water where you are treating for Filamentous algae or Chara your spray should be concentrated where the algae is visible, yet the application rate should be for the entire surface area. When treating for Planktonic Algae the entire surface area must be sprayed.

Cutrine Plus Granular

This granular algaecide is limited to the control of Filamentous Algae & Chara & Nitella. If used for filamentous algae the product must be used while the algae is still on the bottom of the pond or lake. When being used for Chara & Nitella control, this should be done early in the season before a dense growth has formed, if a dense growth has formed, we find that the liquid works better than the granular.

Helpful Treatment Tips
