A Little Philosophy
Aquatic Systems believes in personal service, there are many products on the market for pond and lake owners, whether these products will be good for your pond or lake will depend on your individual situation. With any lake or pond you are dealing with a living ecological system, any changes that you make or anything that you do to the lake or pond will have some effect on all the life in the pond or lake, sometimes the changes can be good and sometimes they can be quite harmful depending on what is done.
Aquatic Systems has been providing chemicals for weed & algae control for many years, yet we are very aware that chemicals do nothing to eliminate the cause of excessive weed & algae growths. Most situations where excessive weeds & algae are a problem come from a very high nutrient levels in the water or bottom sediments. Our sections on aeration & biological augmentation will cover some of the methods that can be used to manage nutrients.
We have many people who ask us if they should be controlling their weeds or algae or if there is chemical treatment that should be done on a maintenance basis to maintain a healthy body of water. The old adage "if it is not broke don't fix it" is a good thing to keep in mind, unless aquatic plants are interfering with the use of the pond or lake, there is really no reason to eliminate them and if you have a problem with them they should only be eliminated in the areas where they are a problem.
There is no magic formula for managing a pond or a lake, not only is each pond or lake different and unique, ponds & lakes are used for many different purposes. A pond used exclusively for fish production is managed much differently from one that is used for swimming & fishing. What we are about at Aquatic Systems is helping people make the best choices for their pond or lake, that fits with what they use the pond or lake for.
There are many products that can be found on store shelves that are registered for use in ponds & lakes. These products have labels with directions for use, you might see that the product should be used at the rate of .6 gallon per acre foot of water, if you have an acre pond with a depth of 10 feet this would mean from what you can see or understand on the label you should be using 6 gallons of the product for your pond. The problem with this is you would be wrong, the pond has a natural slope and the average depth might be 4 feet counting in the slope, so in reality your application rate would be 2.4 gallon for your pond, and that might even be wrong if you just want to get some weeds out of your beach area. The point is that if you just buy a product off of a store shelf and depend solely on the product label to be able to use it or know if it is the right thing for your pond, you could be making a mistake.
Aquatic Systems is a supplier of these items, since we are not a manufacture we have no vested interest in any one given product or brand name, our goal is to see that you get what you need to accomplish what you want in the most environmental safe way as possible.
