Planktonic Algae
Planktonic algae generally grows in the upper two to three feet of water, this algae is comprised of millions of individual algae cells. Planktonic algae is normally found in contained body's of water, and is seldom found in any quanity in flowing water situations. A light growth of this algae will give your water a greenish tint, a heavy growth which is considered it's bloom stage, can give your water the appearance of pea soup.
It is important to remember when treating this type of algae that the entire surface area of the pond or lake must be treated. Unless the pond or lake is very small, this means you will need some type of power sprayer equipment. In order to eliminate Planktonic Algae you must kill it all, this type of algae reproduces at a tremendous rate when weather conditions are right. Granular products do not have enough contact time for this type of algae, liquid algaecides are the most effective treatment.
Your treatment should be done on a morning of a sunny day and when water temperatures are above 55 degrees. It is best to treat this type of algae before it gets into it's bloom stage, since you can not do partial applications, killing to much Planktonic algae at one time can definitely cause an oxygen depeletion problem.
