Septic Systems
We have added this section on septic systems for two reasons, first is that many pond and lake frontage owners have septic systems, second is that a poorly functioning or designed septic system can cause excessive nutrients and bacterial discharge into water bodies.
The most common septic system is made up of a septic tank or tanks and a drain field. The septic tank has two sludge layers, one on the top and one on the bottom. The sludge layers are made up of waste groups that are not broken down by the bacteria in the tank, such as oils, fats, greases, proteins, fruits, vegetables and paper products. The build up of the sludge layers is what causes most septic problems. The most common solution to septic problems is to have the septic tank pumped out on a regular basis, however since we can not see into the septic tank it is hard to know how quickly the sludge layers are building up. Once the top sludge layer builds up, then this sludge starts to be discharged into your drain field where it can cause the most problems.
Sludge discharged into your drain field creates a condition called glazing. Glazing is where waste such as fats, protiens, vegetable gums, clog the pores in the soil so that the liquid waste can no longer be absorbed by the soil and can create situations where you have standing water in your drain field, backups into your house and odor problems. There are three possible solutions to a glazed drain field.
1. Replace the existing drain field, this is the most effective cure however it is a very expensive process.
2. Flush the drain field with a strong chemical solution to disolve build up waste. This solution is somewhat effective, but has some serious side affects such as killing all the natural bacteria in the system and can have detramental effects on the soil and plants in the surrounding area.
3. Utilizing a natural enzyme product to gradually break down the organic waste that is causing the glazing. This is the most ecomonical solution and the most environmentally acceptable.
Although there are a number of septic tank additives on the market, we have chose to handle a product called Septictrine. Septictrine is a concentrated product that contains 5 enzymes to break down the waste that that your sludge layers are made up of.
